Make the Fern Lodge Your Home Base for Adirondack Honeymoon Adventures & Activities

Posted in Couples, Elopements, Weddings

When you choose The Fern Lodge for your wedding and/or Adirondack honeymoon, there’s a multitude of unique and unforgettable adventures you can experience just outside our door. Located in the heart of the southern Adirondack mountains, our inn is the perfect home base while you explore our beautiful region. It’s just one of the many reasons we consider ourselves one of the best honeymoon spots in New York!

Here are some suggestions for nearby excursions near us to form your New York honeymoon itinerary around. Our top local picks include:

Experience Life at ‘Tree Level’

Located just 10 minutes away from the lodge, Adirondack Extreme offers its Tree Top Adventure course, which is an elevated obstacle course where you can take in breathtaking views of the beautiful Adirondack Mountains while securely suspended between the trees at 10 to 60 feet off the ground. Some of the course features include giant Tyrolean zip lines, suspended bridges, swinging surprises, Tarzan (and Jane!) swings, nets and much, much more. Intrepid Adirondack honeymoon adventurers can experience up to six different course levels. Can you make it to the Back Course?

Take a Ride… On a Horse

Close by on the other side of Friends Lake, horseback riding and horse-drawn wagon rides at Circle B Ranch are a longstanding Adirondack honeymoon tradition here in the southern Adirondack region. Enjoy a guided trail ride as new husband and wife! Circle B offers beautiful riding over meadows and through woods, set on more than 500 acres of trails, forests and wide fields with spectacular mountain views.

Hit the Rapids

If you’re visiting us between April and October for your Adirondack honeymoon, experience the thrill of whitewater rafting with North Creek Rafting. Enjoy an amazing full-day adventure spent rafting through the virgin wilderness of the Hudson Gorge.

Pedal on the Rails

For a truly out-of-the-ordinary excursion on your Adirondack honeymoon, spend a day “railbiking,” courtesy of Revolution Rail, which lets you ride a bike on railroad tracks and explore a section of the Adirondacks that has never seen passenger traffic, as you pedal your rail-bike up the old Delaware and Hudson Line on the edge of the river. Check-in at the rail station in North Creek to begin the six-mile course (it’s a two-hour trip). Bring an extra jacket, drinks and snack in your basket on the back of your rail-bike. There are nice places for lunch in North Creek, interesting shops and good spots for a cool cocktail afterward. Be sure to make advance reservations!

Take a Hike!

There are local hikes to suit every level of fitness or interest during your Adirondack honeymoon. Enjoy an exceptional view of the magnificent Adirondacks as you hike! The Town of Chester has eight trailheads it maintains, which are pretty quick, moderate hikes. One of our favorites is Kipp: It’s two hours round-trip, with a killer view of Loon Lake, and just five minutes from our front door. Other favorites which are more of a full-day experience include Crane Mountain, Cat and Thomas Mountains, and Pharaoh Mountain. Slip Falls is also a fantastic hike to a magnificent waterfall.

Channel The Spirit of 1980

Visit the cute little town of Lake Placid, located on Mirror Lake, during your Adirondack honeymoon. It’s chock-full of shops, brewery, eateries and bars. See the 1980 Olympics venues: Go to the top of the ski jumps and check out the ice rink where the “miracle” happened. Then drive up the Whiteface Memorial Highway for unparalleled views of the High Peaks. On the way home, stop at Paradox Brewery’s tasting room at Exit 26. Just north of there is Stick and Stones, a great wood-fired pizza joint with a full regular menu, to finish off your grand jaunt!

Experience the Adirondacks

No visit to the area is complete without a drive up to Adirondack Experience, a wonderful museum in Blue Mountain Lake. Learn about the rich history of the Adirondacks, all overlooking the most amazing vista of Blue Mountain Lake. Many of the exhibits are outside, so we recommend the museum for a nice day during your Adirondack honeymoon.

Take it Easy

Another great option for your Adirondack honeymoon is to go nowhere at all! Take a walk right out the front door, take our kayaks out on the lake, enjoy the hot tub and/or sauna, lounge in the lean-to, the boat house deck or the hammock, or pick blackberries along the road. Enjoy your time celebrating your new life together!
